Migraine Headaches to Explode if Drug Companies Make BCP’s Available Over the Counter

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

The Lancet, a well respected medical journal has called for oral contraceptives to be available to women without a prescription. A jaw-dropping editorial in the January 25 issue of The Lancet accompanied an analysis of birth control pills (BCP’s) and their reported protection against ovarian cancer.

An analysis of 45 studies offered “unequivocal good news” about the wonders of BCP’s. The authors claim that oral contaceptives reduce the risk of ovarian cancer and that over the last 50 years 100,000 ovarian cancer deaths have been prevented because of their use. Their report calculated that the incidence of death from ovarian cancer is reduced from 0.7 to 0.5 per 100 users if used for over 10 years.
They also claim, contrary to more current data, is that BCP’s offer protection against endometrial and colrectal cancer. They do acknowledge that there is an increased risk of breast and cervical cancer.

What they fail to mention, however, is the pandemic of monstrous side effects ranging from migraine headaches, blood clots and strokes, to uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, PMS, heart disease, high blood pressure, decreased mental functioning and depression. The numbers of these effects are in the tens of millions. Perhaps over the past 50 years, the number of women affected with one or more of these problems may exceed 100 million.

So when you balance out 100,000 deaths (which I don’t believe is true - recent data show exactly the opposite) versus a 100 million women with breast cancer, migraine headaches, strokes, heart disease, PMS, depression and other problems which may not be life threatening, but destroys lives nevertheless, how can anyone call for these dangerous drugs (BCP’s) be made more freely available over the counter?

Birth control pills are a danger to the public and a massive fraud perpetrated by the big drug companies in conjunction with the FDA. How many more generations of women are we going to sacrifice for the almighty dollar?
